At Belmont Vets you will receive the time, energy, and expertise from this dedicated team.

Brian Garrett

Veterinarian & Practice Owner

Brian is our Practice Owner and fantastic veterinary leader. Graduating with a Veterinary Science degree in 1992 from the University of Melbourne, Brian has been practicing for what feels like forever and a day (it is no coincidence that his name so closely resembles the word “brain”!). After practicing as a vet in the UK, Brian returned to Australia and purchased the Belmont Vet Hospital with Paula in 2005. He enjoys all aspects of vet practice and has a particular interest in orthopaedic surgery. When he allows himself a day off, Brian can be found sailing, cooking, practicing his hand at trout farming, or walking the dogs.

Tania Brink

Veterinarian

Tania is from South Africa and obtained her veterinary degree at the University of Pretoria in 2009. She began working at Belmont Vets in 2019 after moving to Australia with her husband and 2 young children. Tania has since adopted an adorable little Jack Russell named Bokkie, that keeps her very busy and away from her other hobbies of baking, hiking and fishing.

Reiko Yamazaki-Lai

Veterinarian

Reiko is originally from Canada. She obtained a science degree from the University of Guelph in Canada, before going on to study her veterinary degree at the University of Queensland. After graduating in 2019, Reiko travelled to Newcastle to join our team at Belmont Vet Hospital. In her spare time, Reiko enjoys hiking, going to the gym and surfing.

Emily Surgeon

Veterinarian

Emily obtained her veterinary degree from Sydney University. After graduating in 2008, Emily spent 2 years practicing as an equine veterinarian on the central coast. She moved to Newcastle in 2019 with her family and her adopted stray cat Mao, and began working at our clinic shortly after. When not busy juggling her 3 young children or trying to catch up on sleep, Emily loves being outdoors - riding horses, swimming in the ocean and bush walking.

Paula Garrett

Registered Veterinary Nurse & Practice Manager

Paula is our amazing Practice Manager. Originally hailing from England, Paula graduated from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in Veterinary Nursing in 1994. She moved to Australia in 2000 and now lives on a busy farm surrounded by a range of furry and feathered friends - including horses, chickens, sheep, dogs, cats and Dr Brian. On the rare occasion that she has a day off, you can catch her painting (she is a brilliant artist), singing or find her somewhere in the garden.

Amanda Moncrieff

Veterinary Nurse

Amanda (affectionately known as Mandy) has worked at Belmont Vet Hospital since 2008. She obtained her Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV at Kurri Kurri TAFE and over the past 12 years, has learnt every trick in the book for keeping animals comfortable and calm. Mandy lives at home with her hubby, beautiful young son and 2 cheeky greyhounds. In her free time, Mandy enjoys camping, baking and kicking back to a good Netflix series.

Kasey Heuston

Veterinary Nurse

KC, with her short name and big personality, is sure to keep a smile on everyone’s face. After dabbling in hospitality and working as a riding instructor, KC saw the light and obtained her Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV at Kurri Kurri TAFE. We were lucky enough to add her to our team in 2018. She now lives at home with her partner, 3 dogs (including 2 ferocious chihuahuas), and an obnoxious cat. When not working, she can usually be spotted at the beach or doing something adventurous outdoors.

Sally Richards

Veterinary Nurse

Sal joined the Belmont Vet team in 2019. She obtained her Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV from Scone TAFE and now lives at home in the good company of her horses, dogs and naughty cats. In her free time Sal loves spending time with friends, competing in show jumping comps and collecting plants.

Rosa Mäkilä

Veterinary Nurse

Rosa moved to Australia from Finland in 2014. After studying her Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV at Sydney TAFE, she opted for a sea-change and headed north to Newcastle with her partner. Rosa joined the team at Belmont Vet Hospital in 2019. In her spare time, Rosa can be found hiking, horse riding and exploring the beautiful beaches that Newcastle has to offer.

Samantha Sonter

Veterinary Nurse

Sam is the newest member of our team, having joined Belmont Vet Hospital at the beginning of 2020. Sam obtained her Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV at Gosford TAFE in July 2020 after working at several clinics on the central and mid-north coast. Sam shares her home with her gorgeous young daughter and 2 dogs. In her free time, she’ll either relax by walking her dogs along the beach, or enjoy a bit of thrill-seeking adventure by going 4W-Driving or rock climbing.

Beth Garrett

Trainee Veterinary Nurse

Despite her young looks, Beth has been nursing with the Belmont Vet team since day dot. She recently adopted a greyhound puppy who, after needing two major surgeries within the first 6 months of his life, keeps her at work full time. When not working or studying for her Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV, Beth can be found honing her impressive skills as a SFX makeup artist and drawing.

Hannah Hogan

Trainee Veterinary Nurse

Hannah joined the BVH team in 2018 after completing a stint of work experience at the clinic. She is currently working towards achieving her Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV qualification. Hannah lives at home with a small menagerie of horses, cats and dogs and when not studying or working, can be found horse riding, bush walking or cooking.
